Budapest Metropolitan University and ELIASOL will hold their autumn clothing swap for the tenth time on 17 October. The free programme runs from 2 pm to 5 pm in Building I of METU’s Infopark Campus. The anniversary edition combines a clothes exchange with talks and workshops in which textile remnants and existing objects can be turned into useful pieces.

Participants bring clean, wearable clothes and accessories they no longer use, then select from items contributed by others. The organiser’s aim is straightforward: a garment that is still functional should not become waste too early if it can continue its life with a new owner.

Swapping is not the same as discarding

A clothing swap works only when the incoming pieces are genuinely wearable. Stained, torn or irreparable garments merely transfer the burden of sorting to someone else. Before leaving home, check seams, zips, buttons and care labels. A clean, folded item has a much better chance of finding a new wearer.

The European Environment Agency reports that the average EU citizen consumed 19 kilograms of clothing, footwear and household textiles in 2022. It also notes that a large share of textile waste is not collected separately. A swap cannot solve overproduction, but extending a garment’s useful life can reduce the risk that a good piece becomes waste prematurely.

The best swap item is not the worst garment in the wardrobe, but one we no longer wear and somebody else can still enjoy.

How to prepare

A small, considered selection is more useful than an indiscriminate bag. Choose coats, knitwear, denim or accessories that are in good condition and relevant to the season. Recording key measurements and wearing easy layers can make fitting more practical.

METU says the workshops will turn reuse into a hands-on exercise. Participants can work with textile remnants, make silk flowers and join student-led activities. Not every old textile needs to become another garment. Repair, decoration or a change of function may be enough to restore usefulness.

For Hungary’s fashion community, the event matters because it presents sustainability as a decision rather than a slogan: keep, repair, exchange or take an item to the correct collection point. The tenth METU and ELIASOL swap succeeds if visitors leave not only with a different piece, but with a clearer understanding of why the previous one left their wardrobe.

It is worth slowing down while choosing. A successful swap piece fits not only in size but also in material, care and cut. One garment that will actually be worn is a better result than several pieces that return to the exchange cycle within weeks.
